Getting started
What is CoffeeChat?
A networking app for college students, in any major. You swipe through students, the ones with career goals like yours first, match, practice together, and meet for coffee.
Who can join?
Students who are 18 or older and have a .edu email address from the college or university they attend right now. Any major is welcome: you pick your own major and the career field you are aiming for when you sign up.
Is it free?
Yes. Seeing who liked you, chatting, planning a coffee chat and practice are all free. There are no fees, trials or subscriptions.
Is it a dating app?
No. It is for careers: one small photo, and your profile is about what you study, what you are aiming for and what you have done. Our community guidelines ask everyone to keep it about careers.
Is my school on it?
Any college student with a .edu email can sign up, at any school. You see students from every school on CoffeeChat, and students at your own school come a little sooner, since you can meet them in person. To see only your own school, some majors or some class years, use the filters at the top of Swipe.
Do I need to download anything?
No. CoffeeChat runs in the browser on your phone. To keep it on your phone’s home screen, open it in Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen. In Chrome, open the menu and choose Add to Home screen.
Can I use it on a computer?
CoffeeChat lives on your phone. On a computer you can read this website, log in and reset your password, but the app itself shows one screen with a code: point your phone’s camera at it and the app opens there. A tablet works like a phone.
I didn't get my confirmation email. What now?
Check your spam or junk folder first: the email comes from coffeechat.dev.team@gmail.com. It has an 8-digit code that works for 24 hours. On the Check your email screen, type the code into the eight boxes and tap Continue, or tap Send it again.
Matching and chat
How does matching work?
Your deck is students from every school on CoffeeChat, and they see you too. Students whose majors and target fields line up with yours come first, and students at your own school (read from your school email) a little sooner. Like someone and, if they like you back, you match and a chat opens. People who already liked you are waiting on the Likes tab.
Can I undo a swipe?
Yes, your last pass. Right after you pass on someone, an undo button appears beside the X under the card.
Who can see my profile and my messages?
Other students, at your school and at other schools, can see your profile: your name, class year, school, majors and minors, photo, one-liner, the field you are aiming for, experience, interests, bio, LinkedIn link and badges. The school on a card comes from the student’s school email whenever we know that school. Your email address is never shown. Only you and your match can see your conversation. The details are in the Privacy Policy.
Practice and coffee chats
What is the practice room?
A practice session with a match: a job interview, or the coffee chat itself. Open a conversation, tap the three dots at the top, then Practice together, choose which, and take turns: one of you asks, the other answers, a timer keeps the round moving, then you swap and leave each other feedback. To practice on your own, open Meet and tap Warm up on your own. Solo answers are private to you.
How do coffee chats work?
Open Meet. Pick a match, a day and time and a coffee shop (or Video), and send the invite. When they confirm, you both see the plan. We show a short safety reminder before anyone confirms. Read our safety tips before you go.
Can we have a coffee chat over video?
Yes: a video coffee, made for a match at another school, and open to anyone. In a conversation, tap the video camera at the top right (or pick Video when you plan from Meet). Make the call in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meet, Webex or FaceTime, paste its link, and send the invite. Or save your own room once (Profile, Edit profile, Video room) and every video coffee you plan uses it. Once they say yes, you both get Join call and a calendar invite by email, and each of you sees the time in your own time zone. CoffeeChat doesn’t make the call itself. Grab a coffee and join.
Which campuses have coffee shops listed?
Anyone with a .edu email can join. Today the coffee shop list covers 15 campuses: Auburn, Bates, Florida State, Indiana, James Madison, Penn State, Sacred Heart, Santa Fe College, UNC Chapel Hill, the University of Florida, the University of Miami, the University of South Carolina, the University of Tampa, the University of Virginia and Virginia Tech. We are adding more. When you plan a coffee chat, the app can use your location to put the closest shops first. Your location stays on your phone: we never see or save it.
Safety and your account
Is it safe to meet up?
Coffee chats are planned at coffee shops near campus, and both of you confirm before one is set. A short safety reminder shows before anyone confirms, and you can block or report anyone: a person on our team reviews every report. Read our safety tips before you go.
What does the verified check mean?
That person did a live face scan in the app (looking at the camera and turning their head), and it matched their profile photo. It is not a background check.
How do I get verified, and what happens to my face scan?
Go to Profile, then Verification, and tap Verify. Look straight at the camera, then turn your head left and right when the screen asks. It takes about ten seconds. The scan is compared with your profile photo once and then discarded: we don’t keep it or any face measurements. More in the Privacy Policy.
How do I block or report someone?
In a conversation, tap the three dots, then Block or Report. A person on our team reviews every report. More in our community guidelines.
I forgot my password.
On the log in screen, tap Forgot password? and we will email you a code. Type the code and a new password on the same screen and you are back in.
How do I delete my account?
Go to Profile, tap the gear for Settings, then Delete account. It is permanent, and it removes your profile, photos, matches and messages right away.
Mentors and recruiters
Who are the mentors?
People with jobs who want to help students, a few at a time. Each one applied and was approved by the students who built CoffeeChat. One comes up on Swipe now and then (at most one a day, with a gold Mentor badge), and you can see them all under Browse mentors on your Meet tab, people in your field first. Like a mentor’s card, or tap Ask, to ask for a coffee chat (a video call, or coffee when you’re near each other); if they say yes, a conversation opens. Pass, and you won’t see them on Swipe for 30 days; Swipe’s filters can turn mentors off. You can have 2 mentors going at once, and a mentor only sees your card when you ask them.
I want to mentor students. Can I join?
Yes, a few at a time. Apply as a mentor with your work email: your work, the college you went to if any, earlier roles, your field and a short bio. We read every application before any student sees you, usually within two days. Mentors don’t swipe: students ask you, you see them in your Likes and say yes or not now. You pick how many students a month, or no limit, and you can pause new asks anytime on your Profile. Read the mentor guidelines first.
I'm a recruiter. Can I join?
Soon. Recruiters are not open yet. Join the waitlist: pick Recruiter and leave your email.
